By 2022.12, 77 coal to SNG projects (NOT include Coal Gas Methanation Projects) are planned in China with total annual output capacity to exceed 300 bcm. In recent years, however, most of these projects are postponed because of low gas price. Only 5 pilot projects with 5.96 bcm total annual output capacity were commissioned by 2018. Many projects were re-planned to reduce the natural gas output and to produce more methanol and ethylene glycol instead. |

As China has to rely on imported natural gas to meet 40% its consumtpion demand (2017 data), the call for state energy security is revitalizing the domestic coal-to-SNG projects. Production bases in Zhundong, IIi, and Ordos are expected to add 50 bcm SNG per year by 2025. |
